Ignite

My geography teacher was explaining something that I just couldn’t listen to. I turned back to see her desk once again. It was empty and with the beatiful purple iris on it.

Two weeks since Sally has passed away because this terrible accident. I couldn’t put up with it, because I hardly knew the truth. I realized that it wasn’t an accident, her house started to burn on purpose. The worst thing about it all was that I perfectly knew the persons that caused fire. They did that. Those pair of idiots, of insensible guys. They were always laughing of her, making she feel uncomfortable, throwing on floor her confidence. One night, they decided it is time to do the ugly joke. But things went out of control, and when fire started to burn Sally’s house, they ran away as cowards. I… I couldn’t save her. Maybe I’m a coward too.

The night came again, and as always since that day, I couldn’t sleep without having a nightmare. I got up and I escaped through my bedroom’s window. I started to walk without thinking, and suddenly, I realized where my feet were taking me to. In few minutes, I was in front of Sally’s house again.

It was a sad, dusty place. The pain came again over my chest, killing me. If I could only be faster if I could save her… I pretended to came back home when I saw them. Two shadows were getting closer to Sally’s door. Before it arrived at where I was, I opened the door and got into the rammshackle house without thinking. The inside was dark and a little creepy. But which turned black place was where Sally had had dreams and hopes once, I thought hopeless. Even it seemed like they were going to fall down at any moment, I decided to go upstairs.

By the time I arrived to the second floor, I heard their voices, completely shocked. Was them again, those pair of murderers whom provocate fire. What the hell were they doing here?!

-Hey, dude. Are you sure of that?-asked one of them-I mean… It has passed two weeks since then and nobody knows was just us. Everybody keeps thinking it was an accident, so why should we…?

-Shut up. We have to make sure there’s no evidence that we provocated the fire that night.-reproached the other.

I had to make huge efforts in order to keep silent because the rage was hitting me, it made me want to shout.

-Ok, fine.-finally agreed the other-But let’s do it fast, ok? This place scares me.

-Oh, come on. It’s just…

At that moment, the door closed behind them.

-What the…?

-I told you! Let’s go from here!

It was imposible. They couldn’t open the door again. They couldn’t escape. They were caught, like me. But the worse part of it was when she appeared behind them at the end of the stairs. I couldn’t believe it. It was her.

-Hi, guys. Nice to see you again.-her voice sounded so far away.

They looked back and screamed. Their knees started to shake with violence.

-Sa-Sally?

-That’s imposible! You’re dead!

-Oh, yeah. I am.-her laughs put me on edge-But now I’m here again, and I’m so pleased to see you here too with me.

They went to the door, trying to open it again. But it was useless.

-So you want to play with fire, don’t you?-Sally said, getting closer
to them-Fine, let’s play…

She started to get ignited in front of my eyes.

-Holy shit!-said one of them terrified-What the fuck are you, a monster?

-A kind of…-laughed she, raising her hands.

The fire started in the middle of the room and  sooner it reached the door where they were hitting it in despair, trying to escape. But it was too late. It was a died chance, I guess. Sally laughed again when they screamed in pain, dying. Even her revenge was done, her body kept getting ignited. The fire started to burn the whole house once more.

-Sally…-I murmured her name at the same time I heard the firefighters’ trucks coming up to the street.

She turned back and her big brown eyes bright with more intensity for a second.

-Lyan…-she said my name, made me feel defenceless-What are you doing here? Wait… You… They…-started she, got confused.

-I came here because I can’t forget you.-I interrumped her, feeling the flames coming through the stairs-Sally…-I called her again-What did you do?

-I’m so sorry, Lyan.-apologised for her. It seemed that she was crying under all the flames that covered her body-But sometimes when you start a fire, you can’t extinguish it.

The flames became faster, starting to burn my skin. The firefighters’ alarm sounded louder and louder, but I couldn’t see any more. I closed my eyes, I waited for my death. However, what I actually saw wasn’t that specter with a black hoodie and a scythe. It was two weeks ago, when Sally was alive.

She was at the kitchen’s window, watering a bouquet of the gorgeus purple iris. Her favorites flowers. Suddenly, her hands started to shake. I knew why. They were laughing in the other side of the window. She left the kitchen and went upstairs. The only thing she wanted was to hide, to get away from there. I felt her pain, I felt her fear. Something started to burn inside me.

I saw Sally’s parents coming to her daugter’s room, talking with her, giving her a hug, wondering why she looked so scared. I saw the fire burning the first floor, I heard their shouts, I observed them trying to escape, trying to extinguish the flames. I saw her, whitout life, getting burned slowly. I wanted to shout, to get away from that hell, from those memories that were killing me. But there were no words, no voice, was empty. I should keep on dreaming, because I heard her voice again, calling out my name. Since I realized it was actually her voice.

I opened my eyes and I felt her tears falling onto my cheek. Sally was in front of me, and she was holding me. The flames, still covering all her skin, and it burned all my body, but I didn’t care about that. Because she was again by my side.

-Sally…-I called her once again-You’re getting ignited.-I said, and I felt really stupid.

I saw a little smile in her lips. I felt the luckiest person in the world.

-I have to go, Lyan. I caused too many problems. As when I was alive.-claimed she, separating of me with tears in her eyes.

-Sally! You’re wrong!-I held her hand. It was heated, but it didn’t hurt me. I wanted her by my side. I didn’t want to see her disapear again-You didn’t do anything, Sally!

-I’m not sure about that, Lyan.-smiled her-What’s about my revenge? I caused two deads, and this house is burning again. Even you, Lyan.

-Wait… What do you…?-I wondered.

-You’re igniting too, Lyan.

I took a look at my body and I realized she was right. Now, the flames were covering me too. I felt the flames running trhough my veins, heating my blood.

-In this case, stay with me, Sally. Don’t let me alone, please. If you go again, I will not be able to support it.-I asked her, with my tears starting to fall down.

-I can’t do that, Lyan.-sobbing her-I have to go.

-But you can’t leave like that.-I reproached to her again-You put my heart on fire, Sally. And you know, sometimes when you do that, you can’t extinguish it.

-Don’t make it harder, Lyan. I don’t want you die like me.

-I don’t care about that. I want to stay with you.

-You should. Bye, Lyan.

And then, she held me onto her arms again. I closed my eyes, I wanted to stay like that eternally.

-Lyan.-she whispered my name-I’ll stay alive in your heart. Thank you, and don’t feel responsable for anything.

She pushed me away and the latest thing I could see was that. She was burning in the middle of the flames.

I woke up with a terrible headache. At first, I felt a little confused, since I realized where I was. The fire had been extinguished. I stood up, walking between ashes. I went downstairs and I saw it in the middle of the room. Covered by ashes, the flames had let a purple iris that seemed to shine. I caught it and smelt it, feeling my heart dying by the presence of Sally’s memory.
The door opened and a group of men entered in the house. They shouted and looked to me, terrified.

-What the hell are you?!-wanted one of the firefighters, pointed to me.

It has passed a few seconds since I realized what was going on.

My body continue getting ignited.
